The 4th Chinese Debate Competition for Freshmen of the International School

The International School held the preliminary rounds and the final of the 4th Chinese debate competition for freshmen in the Qizhi Building on October 13th, 14th , 27th and 29th, 2020. Judges included Mr. Yang Lijun, Counselor of the International School; Zhang Zhibin, a representative from the Accounting School Debate Team; representatives from the Student Union and staff from the International School.

Before each session, the moderator explained the rules of the debate and announced the start of the competition. In the preliminary stage, the topic focused on “what I do is good for you, whether this sentence is ridiculous or not. The pro side were required to give evidence to support “this sentence is ridiculous”. And the con side gave reasons to prove “this sentence is not ridiculous”. Three rounds were conducted among six teams, “I am right” Team vs “What you say is wrong” Team, “Easy to win” Team vs “What I say is right” Team, “What you say is right” Team vs “Salted Fish” Team. In the competition, the debaters provided a both visual and audio feast for audiences. Each team vigorously supported their perspectives and illustrated their opinions with clarity and courage. After a few fierce rounds, “What I say is right” Team, “What you say is wrong” Team, “Salted Fish” Team and “I am right” Team won in the preliminary stage.

In the Preliminary Round

In the final stage, debaters centered around the topic “Does a person who wants to achieve great accomplishment need to care about details”. The con side supported “a person who wants to achieve great accomplishment doesnt need to care details”. And the pro side stated “a person who wants to achieve great accomplishment needs to care details”. In this session, team members fully demonstrated their flexible debating skills and solid theoretical foundation. Their debating produced an atmosphere of both tension and excitement. In the end, “What you say is wrong” Team, “What I say is right” Team and “I am right” Team won in the final. Huang Dingyi and Dong Shiqian were recognized as the Best Debaters”.

Judges Making Comments

In closing, Chen Xinyu, Xiong Manqian and Zhang Jianxi, as judges made closing comments on the competition. They praised all debaters for their wonderful performances and hoped they can learn from the debate process and make great progress in the future.
